3   -   FAA Safety Seminar: AERONAUTICAL CHARTS: LITTLE KNOWN FACTS
Redhook Brewery, Pease Tradeport, Portsmouth, NH from 6:30 to 8:30pm
Aeronautical charts and publications contain a wealth of information - some of it never taught, or taught but quickly forgotten - but information that can save time, money, frustration, and sometimes lives. What's an OROCA, an MEF? Where are non-standard traffic patterns published? Which obstructions are charted and where? Can the mountain pass charted on the sectional be used? Do you have all available information? Is it current? How will GPS affect your charts? What are the plans for new products? This presentation offers these topics, as well as others, and gives you an opportunity to ask questions.
Sponsored by the FAA Office of Aeronautical Charting and Cartography, Daniel Webster College & Redhook Brewery. For more, contact (207) 780-3263 X106.

More accidents occur in the takeoff and landing phases of flight than any other. It is the close proximity to the ground that leaves less margin for error. Some pilots never really master the basics, then it's only a matter of time before they have a problem. Is the runway long enough? Are there obstructions? What is the density altitude? Is there a crosswind? These are just some of the considerations that will be addressed in this interactive seminar.
Directions: I-95 to Exit 5 to Portsmouth traffic circle. Take exit off circle for Rte 1 Bypass South. Go 2.5 miles. Restaurant is on the right.

Loss of aircraft control is a leading cause of accidents, both on the ground and in-flight. What situations are most likely to lead to control loss? We will discuss the aerodynamics and techniques behind many basic flight maneuvers, from slow flight & stalls to crosswind landings & go-arounds. The 2001 New England Region Aviation Safety Counselor of the Year, Byron Danforth, will lead us on a discussion that will be educational and colorful. Bring a pilot friend.

26   -   FAA Safety Seminar: SPINS
Sanford Air, Sanford Airport, Sanford, ME from 6:30 to 8:30pm
Think that you will never be involved in a spin accident? After all, the plane you fly does not spin easily and you never fly really slowly. But have you ever used a little extra rudder to correct an overshot turn to final? Have you ever circled an object on the ground while your attention was on the object, not on flying the aircraft? A spin takes two ingredients: a stall and yaw. And an aircraft can be stalled at any airspeed and any attitude. Aviation Safety Counselor Jean Hardy has performed more than 3000 spins. She will lead us through an in-depth discussion on the situations leading to a spin, how to avoid a spin, and how to recover if you find yourself in a spin. CFIs are encouraged to attend and bring a student.
Directions: Take I-95 to Exit 2. Go north on route 109 for 7.5 miles. Sanford Air will be on your left behind the Lucas Country Store (1.5 miles from intersection of route 4 and 109).
Sponsored by Sanford Air. For more, contact (207) 324-0905.
